Noise, Noise, Noise

I long for a peaceful and a quiet environment. That is, a noiseless environment where I can sit quietly reading a book like All Over but the Shoutin’ by Rick Bragg while eating a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise, with a bag of lay’s potato chips and sipping on a 16 ounce Pepsi. When I am home, or at least the place where I live, a host of children: Lucy, Bubba, Jermaine, Emily, Jaylin, Cameron, Kolin, Sephan and London, literally run down one step, two steps, then jumps from the third step. London, soon to be four years old in October says to Cameron the two year olds and probably soon to be three year old, “do you want to play, do you want to play with this, Cameron, ha Cameron, do you?” Kolin, Sephan and London are the children of my first granddaughter. They are like sweet rolls with grape jelly and a touch of melted butter. Their words are smooth as silk. On the other hand, the remaining ones whose names I will not speak at this moment, exhibits razor like qualities, their words cut like a knife. They are harsh and cold and rude and disrespectful, I have to say I do not care for them at this moment in my life. Noise, Noise, and more noise, I just can’t get rid of the noise. Jermaine, the sixteen year old, listens to music on his phone. It is imperative, to him, that he share this unwanted music indirectly with me. For instance, I really don’t care to know what he listens to that’s why there are headphones. However, he makes a point of yelling, “Wow, woo, hey, or something like that. I look at him, he look at me and says, “What?” Can’t get rid of the noise in this house!!!! Of course, there is the uneven bathroom door. The door creaks as it is opened, then the occupant slams the door shut – bam! No one holds the door until it closes it appears that they take the palm of their hand and push it with full force. Then there is the loosely fitting front door which no one bothers to hold. Slam! No one holds the front door until it closes; they open it and let it go. Slam!!!! Noise surrounds me at that house so I come to Sterne Library and sit in the front section near the Reference Desk hoping for some quiet. On occasions, students chat with each other, chat on the phone. I find it comforting to go upstairs in a reserved room – ah – the peace. I finally found a quiet spot where I can read only I don’t have my turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise, with a bag of lay’s potato chips while sipping on a 16 ounce Pepsi.

  1. Lovely details, Mary. I hope you find some peace in your life soon. A friend of mine used to write her novels by the dryer as it drowned out the noise in the house. :)
