I was working on a poem for my beginning poetry class last night. My 8-year-old daughter was working on what I thought was homework at the kitchen table. Turns out, she was writing a poem that she wanted me to turn into to my teacher for her. I know I sound like a bragging parent (I am) but she is an amazing writer for such a young girl. I told her that not only would I turn it into my teacher but I would post it on the blog. She was very excited.
Here is the poem (I left the words the same way she spelled them, remember she's in 2nd grade):
CRISTMAS
By Ellie I.
Undernethe the missile-toe ...
Dances freedom and snow.
It's Cristmas!
You see the skirt undernethe the tree.
Where presents will soon be.
Snow flakes dance along with lots of glee.
It's Cristmas!
It's Cristmas!
It's a beautiful piece. She could become the next great poet - who knows. Besides when my granddaughter was probably in the fifth or sixth grade she wrote me a letter using the words "pacific" for "specific." But she is older and knows better now.
