Things kids say

I use substitute teaching as one way to supplement my income as a freelance journalist. I'm in my third year doing this - solely in elementary school - and absolutely love my experiences (even on the tough days). One thing that makes it fun are the things you hear from the kids.

On Friday, I had a substitute assignment as an instructional support teacher, which means I basically float around different classrooms and work with some of the more 'difficult' kids. Early in the day I was in a kindergarten class working with one of my favorite students. He's a quirky little fella with tons of intelligence and very little work ethic. It's his second year of kindergarten and I worked with him plenty last school year.

We were sitting at his table, working on vocabulary words, when he began smelling my right arm. He has this thing for smelling everything he can. After a few seconds, he told me I smelled good. I thanked him and then he gave me this reason for his proclamation: "You smell like a locker room."

I suppose I took it as a compliment.
